Ifa is an ancient Yoruba system of wisdom and divination. When you receive a reading, several sacred concepts are revealed. This guide explains each one in plain language.
An Odu is a sacred chapter of Ifa. There are 256 Odu in total, each one a vast body of stories, teachings, warnings, and blessings. Think of each Odu as a living library — when it appears in your divination, it means its energy is present and relevant in your life right now. The Odu that appears is not random; Ifa teaches it is revealed by Orunmila, the Orisha of wisdom and destiny.
Every Odu can appear in two orientations:
Ire — a positive, favourable alignment. The energy of the
Odu is working in your favour, bringing blessings, health, longevity, or
abundance.
Ayewo — a cautionary alignment. The energy is present but
something needs attention, correction, or spiritual action to restore balance.
Within Ire or Ayewo, there are specific types of blessing or challenge. Aiku means longevity and good health. Aje relates to wealth. Isegun relates to victory and so on. The specific orientation tells you exactly which area of life the Odu is speaking to.
Ebo is a prescribed offering or spiritual action — something
you do to activate the blessing (in Ire) or resolve the challenge (in Ayewo).
It is not a punishment; it is a practical spiritual step, like taking
medicine.
Adimu is a more personal offering made directly to your
Orisha.
The Orisha are divine forces in Yoruba spirituality — each governing a domain of life and nature. Ogun governs iron, labour, and new roads. Oshun governs love and fertility. Shango governs thunder and justice. When an Orisha appears in your reading, their energy is active in your situation.
Ifa is revealed through a pattern of four marks, each corresponding to one of the four elements (Fire, Air, Water, Earth) and their governing Orisha. A single mark | means that energy is open — active and flowing freely in your life. A double mark || means that energy is latent — present but not fully activated, requiring your attention and spiritual action.
Ebora are the spiritual intermediaries or guardians specific to each Odu — sacred forces that are particularly attentive when that Odu is present. Honouring them strengthens your alignment with the Odu's energy.
Each Odu has sacred plants (Ewe) associated with it. These are used in spiritual baths, teas, and ritual preparations to strengthen the body and spirit in alignment with the Odu's teaching.
Eewo are sacred prohibitions. Every Odu carries specific things a person should avoid — certain foods, behaviours, or actions that would weaken their alignment with their destiny. Respecting the Eewo is part of living in harmony with the Odu.
This guide is an introduction only. For a full and personalised interpretation, always consult a qualified Babalawo or Iyánífá. Ifa is a living tradition — no digital tool replaces the sacred relationship between the diviner and the Odu.
